Thomas Covington has announced that he suffered a torn ACL during the Saturday portion of the 2017 Motocross of Nations, an injury that he raced through during Sunday’s motos. The Open class rider for Team USA broke the news on Tuesday with an Instagram post and said that he will undergo surgery on Wednesday. Covington races for the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing MX2 team run by Jacky Martens in the Monster Energy FIM Motocross World Championship and lives in Belgium year-round.
Covington’s two motos in the mud at Matterley Basin were hampered by small crashes and he posted 17-22 moto scores in his two races.
By going under the knife immediately, the twenty-two year old will have ample time to recover and prepare for the 2018 Monster Energy FIM Motocross World Championship, which will be his final year in the MX2/250 class (the class has a rule that prevents racers over the age of twenty-three from lining up).
