In between races, we took some time to browse our hard drives and look at photos taken throughout the year. We’ll highlight each shot in a daily post, with the image sized to fit your computer screen or smartphone and described with a small backstory…
I have two daughters, so I never really had the chance to be a “mini dad.” Sure, Samantha and Megan both rode PW50s when they were little, but soccer took over as their passion before they were both 10 years old and I was perfectly fine with that. To be honest, I don’t know how parents do it; the anxiety I felt as I watched them putt around was nearly unbearable and I can’t imagine what it’s like to watch your kid fly through the air over full-sized jumps on today’s tracks. I’d like to think that if I had a son, I wouldn’t have been a gnarly mini dad. You know the type: breaking pit boards and screaming when performances are not up to par…
A few years ago, I had the pleasure of watching my friend Doug Dubach interact with his son Carter at the track. Certainly more accomplished in the sport than most, Dubach has plenty of experience and knowledge to pass on to his son. Instead of pressuring him to go fast, Doctor D put more emphasis on having fun and riding safely. It was refreshing to me, especially since we launched the TWMX Race Series a few years ago and I have seen more than my fair share of mini parents being a little too aggro with their kids.
A few weeks ago, I saw Carter circulating the Pala Raceway track and was impressed with the speed he’d gained since I last saw him. The second-generation racer has completed at plenty of our TWMXRS events, and I always cheer for him from the sidelines…it’s kind of hard not to when you’re friends with a nice guy like Doug.
If you missed it the first time around, check out this feature I did with Dubach about how he feels a parent should interact with his junior racer… CLICK HERE
