Sign of the (Lap) Times: Glen Helen

Glen Helen Raceway San Bernardino, CA Race Center: Glen Helen Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship

Well, the 24-0 talk for Eli Tomac got shut down pretty quickly. Marvin Musquin proved that a bad start from Tomac is the only window he needs to run away with a moto win, and that might be more worrying to Tomac and Monster Energy Kawasaki than the front brake issue he suffered in moto two.

Osborne's chances for a perfect season also went out the window at Glen Helen. He still managed to take the overall with 4-2 moto scores, but it was Jeremy Martin and Dylan Ferrandis who each had dominant motos in the 250 Class.

Let’s dive into the lap data to figure out how these races were won and lost with this week’s Sign of the Lap Times. First, our traditional lap time charts.

The Gap

At Hangtown we saw Tomac move through the pack with relative ease in the second moto, catching Musquin late in the race, passing him, and extending his lead out to nearly nine seconds by the end of the race.

When Tomac rounded the first lap in 12th place in the first moto at Glen Helen, the gap up to Musquin seemed big, but it felt like there was still a pretty good possibility that he would be able to make it work. He didn't.

Tomac lost a bunch of time during the first four laps as he settled into his position and started to pick off riders. Once he got a clear track he was able cut Musquin's lead down to just over 10 seconds, but then around the halfway mark of the race, the momentum seemed to stop. Musquin was able to stabilize his lead and went into cruise control mode on the last two laps, raising his lap times by three to four seconds.

That first moto win for Musquin was huge as it showed Tomac doesn't have much breathing room as it appeared at Hangtown. Maybe all it takes is a bad start, which is something that Tomac has struggled with in the past. Musquin's average starting position after lap one this season is 2.8, and Tomac has struggled to get out of the gate in three out of the four motos this season. Keep an eye on that as we get deeper into the season.

Jeremy Martin and Dylan Ferrandis both dominated a moto at Glen Helen, with Martin taking the moto one win and Ferrandis taking the second moto. Most expected Ferrandis to get some wins this season, but the way he did it at Glen Helen surprised a lot of people. He just absolutely dominated everyone in that second moto, winning by 23 seconds over championship leader Zach Osborne.

Here are Martin's lap times from moto one and Ferrandis' lap times from moto two. You can see that Ferrandis isn't lacking speed at all, nearly matching the two-time champion's lap times that were logged on a smoother track. We'll see if Ferrandis can take the next step and put two motos together for an overall win.

It usually takes a few rounds to figure out the pecking order for the season, and a quick look at the 450MX points illustrates this quite well. We obviously have Musquin and Tomac out front, but Blake Bagget who sits in third only has a 10 point cushion on eighth place in the championship. We'll see if this group of six riders can figure out their spots in a few rounds or if they'll continue to swap positions.
