WHAT’S NEW AT THE 2017 MONSTER ENERGY CUP?

Ken Roczen looked like he was going to win last year’s Monster Cup, but something happened on his way to the million dollars.

(1) Three, 10-Lap Main Events, and any racer who wins all three Main Events takes home $1 million, the largest purse in motorcycle racing. If you don’t win all three motos, you just get $100,000.

(2) There is a split starting gate with 44 feet of separation between the two ends. There will be 11 racers on each side. Additionally, the starting gate will be elevated 12 feet in the air allowing for maximum speed heading into the first turn.

(3) The Joker Lane is the longest in Monster Cup history. This year, although longer than in the past, the Joker Lane is actually quicker than staying on the track. Every rider must take the Joke Lane once during the race.

(4) The 2017 Monster Energy Cup also features the Amateur All-Stars and Supermini racers in two, 6-Lap Main Events.

(5) There will be a Biggest Whip contest, which will serve as an X Games Qualifier, plus a Monster Energy head-to-head truck racing exhibition (Jeremy McGrath, Brian Deegan, Casey Currie and B.J. Baldwin are schedule to drive.

(6) The Monster Energy Cup will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 2 on Saturday, October 14 (6:30 p.m. Pacific time). Then, again on Sunday, October 15, on the Fox Network following that week’s NFL games.

Eli Tomac won the 2016 version of the Monster Cup.

THE WOMEN’S WORLD MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP IS CLOSEST EVER

Two-time Women’s World Champion Livia Lancelot says that she will retired after this weekend’s race.

Four riders will go into the final round of the 2017 Women’s World Motocross Championship this weekend separated by five points. Nancy Van De Ven won last week in Holland to take a 2 point lead over Courtney Duncan, 3 points ahead of Livia Lancelot and 5 points up on Kiara Fontanesi. Women’s racing, both in America and Europe had difficult times since their hey-day a few years ago. The Women’s GP series has been cut back to only 6 races, while the American version has become just another class at the big amateur events.

Perhaps the drama coming to France this weekend will boost their profile. Four riders from four countries, with seven titles between them, should attract some postive attention for women’s racing.

2017 WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS STANDINGS
(After 5 of 6 races) 1. Nancy Van De Ven…193 2. Courtney Duncan…191 3. Livia Lancelot…190 4. Kiara Fontanesi…188 5. Larissa Papenmeier…160 6. Amandine Verstappen,…151 7. Nicky van Wordragen…119 8. Shana van der Vlist…89 9. Francesca Nocera…80

10. Steffi Laier…72

Chiara Fontanesi, a four-time Champion (2012-2015) is the long-shot at 5 points out of the title—and 5 points is nothing in GP racing.

JAGO GEERTS: THE MOST DANGEROUS FINISH LINE JUMP IN MOTOCROSS

A BIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE: THE BANANA FRAME

You may not believe it, but in the 1960s the Czech-built, banana frame Jawa’s were the hot bikes, not only for motocross, but for offroad racing. Czechoslovakia was under communist control, but enjoyed the ability to sell Czech products beyond the Iron Curtain. Jawa and CZ were produced in the same factory.

HONDA’S PROJECT 2&4 IS A TRICK TRACK CAR

sidewinderhondaThe Honda sidewinder track car is half car and half motorcycle.

Honda’s answer to track cars like the Ariel Atom and BAC Mono is the Project 2&4, which employs a motorcycle engine in a very lightweight chassis. Honda’s Project 2&4 is powered by the RC213V motorcycle engine. The engine is a 999 cc V-4 four-stroke unit that puts out 215 horsepower at 13,000 rpm. The transmission is provided by a six-speed DCT gearbox. Overall length is 119 inches, width is 71 inches and height is 39 inches. The weight of 890 pounds. It is styled to look like Honda’s classic RA272 Formula 1 car (which won the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix, driven by American Richie Ginther). The design is a sidewinder-style with the driver offset to the left in a sketchy looking position. It can carry a passenger by removing a cover on the right side of the body work. Project 2&4 was conceived by Honda’s motorcycle design studio in Asaka, Japan. It is unlikely that this car will ever see production.
