Beta factory rider Steve Holcombe has rocketed to the top of the EnduroGP World Championship standings following a 1/2 result at round three of the World Championship series in Spoleto, Italy. Capitalizing on a day one DNF from early class leader Matt Phillips (Sherco), Holcombe now sits 21 points clear of his nearest challenger, but with six two-day events remaining.

In the 250cc Enduro 2 class Spanish wonder kid Josep Garcia claimed his first career senior class double win, topping the class on both days to move to the top of the E2 championship standings. In complete contrast to Garcia’s perfect points haul it was a bad weekend at the office for Finn Eero Remes. Unable to finish higher than eighth on day one the reigning Enduro 1 World Champion worked his way up to sixth on day two.

Joining in on the action in central Italy was veteran US racer Mike Brown, competing for the same Italian JET Racing team with which he contested selected rounds of the SuperEnduro (Endurocross) World Championship. Topping the timesheets at the end of Friday night’s prologue sprint, Browny battled his way to 16th on day one and 12th on day one.

“It’s been so much harder than the ISDE races I’ve competed in, but it’s been great and I’m pleased I’ve now experienced a world championship event,” commented the Husqvarna rider. “The heat, the long enduro test, the tight time controls, the long days, it was certainly a tough two days.”

In the Enduro Junior class victory was shared by Italy’s Davide Soreca, who topped day one, and British rider Brad Freeman, who won on day two.
