2018 KTM SX, SX-F, XC, XC-W, EXC-F & Mini Models Announced

2172
...

KTM has unveiled its 2018 motocross and off-road motorcycles and we’ve got all the updates and info you’ll need here. The biggest news for the new models in the addition of a fuel-injected two-stroke, the 250 XC-W TPI. It’s a fuel injected, and oil injected, two-stroke that KTM claims will deliver smoother power and better fuel mileage by injecting the fuel charge into the transfer ports with two injectors. The machine controls the fuel delivery and engine timing based off of five sensors that monitor air pressure (intake and ambient), throttle position, and temperature (oil and water). The oil injection is controlled electronically and KTM says its oil tank is good for up to five tanks of fuel. This machine comes with an updated WP Xplor fork and shock, with the rear suspension using the PDS system, not the linkage. The FI two-stroke will only be offered on the 250cc model in the United States, not the 300cc model; outside of the US there will be a 300cc offering, with both of those global models using the EXC TPI model designation. Riders in the US who would prefer the 250 with a carburetor will have that option with the “standard” 250 XC-W which sends pre-mixed fuel through an updated 38mm Mikuni TMX carb. Check back on dirtrider.com for our first impression of this FI two-stroke – we’re riding the US-spec bike in Austria this week!

The 2018 SX-F and SX lines inherit the updates that the 2017.5 Factory Edition 250 and 450 SX-Fs got. Small changes on paper but a noticeable improvement on the track stepped those 2017.5 bikes up to the next level. These updates include new internal settings as well as some new fork components (the left fork leg gets a new air piston, air seal, and rebound spring. The right (damping) side gets a sintered piston in place of the former plastic piston.). The 125SX and 150SX get new aluminum head stays, and all the SX-F and SX bikes get an orange frame.

The XC-F and XC lines (250 & 300 XC and 250, 350 and 450 XC-F) also benefit from those Factory Editions, as they get the updated fork components and settings, and that crisp-looking orange frame. The two-stroke XCs get a new CDI that isn’t said to have a new power map, but that is claimed to make the bikes start more easily. The XC-Fs, like the new SX-F line, get updates to the transmission and clutch for improved durability.

The EXC lines, KTM’s dual sports that are fully dirt ready machines that happen to have a license plate on them, return with updated suspension settings to the WP Xplor fork and shock (the shock is part of a PDS no-link rear suspension); the new fork has new outer tubes that KTM claims reduce stiction and also weight.

For the young racers there is a some very big news in the form of an all-new 85SX (17” 14” wheels), which has a new engine and a revised frame, both claimed to be lighter, and a new fork with the WP AER 43 fork. The engine has an all-new and adjustadirtriderble power valve and it is claimed to save a pound and a half over last year’s engine. The frame is claimed to save nearly a pound over the 2017 frame. And the AER fork joins the 85cc class in the form of the all-new 43mm AER fork from WP (Last year a 35mm AER fork made its way onto the 50 and 65 SX models). The other mini model coming to the US besides the 85, 65 and 50 is the 50 SX Mini. The updates to the 85 SX are especially exciting for young riders and racers because the class in general is not often updated from the manufacturers and KTM is obviously putting the R&D time into their machine for the next generation of riders.

That’s the quick overview. There are a few more updates, as well as tons of details and specifications of all these models, below. The following is information provided by KTM:

The engine of the 125 SX has been known to be the most powerful and most competitive engine of its class and it is clear two-strokes are going to have a successful future at KTM thanks to outstanding power-to-weight ratio, a low operating cost and simplicity. The 2018 KTM 125 SX produces better power all over the rev range while being more compact and significantly lighter than all others. Improvements such as aluminum head stays, redesigned radiator guards and new suspension damping settings further elevate the READY TO RACE game of the 125 SX.

Already proven to be a strong performer, the KTM 350 SX-F gets even better for 2018 with a host of updates that further refine a racer that has no equal. The concept is simple: 450 cc power levels with the agility of a 250-class racer. While the concept is may seem easy; the execution is where it matters and the 2018 KTM 350 SX-F achieves a power to weigh ratio that stuns the competition. A compact engine cranks out unbelievable amounts of power while traction control, launch control and selectable maps make all that power useable. Updated suspension damping settings and refinements to the clutch, transmission and battery take the KTM 350 SX-F to a level that other 450-class machines have trouble matching.

The 2018 KTM 85 SX is a completely new weapon for class supremacy. An all-new model from the ground up, the 85 SX boasts an engine with more power and rideability across the entire rev range and a chassis that allows the rider to use every bit of that power. There is no 85cc machine that is more READY TO RACE than the 2018 KTM 85 SX.

2018 KTM 85 SX HIghlights

  • NEW engine with improved power and torque over the entire rev range is 1.5 pounds lighter.
  • NEW cylinder is designed around an all new power valve system that is adjustable and increases torque and controllability.
  • NEW crankshaft is lighter than before while having more inertia for better torque. Optimized balancing reduces vibrations.
  • NEW DS (Diaphram Spring) clutch is more compact with better performance than a conventional coil spring design.
  • NEW crankcases are more compact with a shaft arrangement that is close as possible to the center of gravity.
  • NEW lighter transmission with the same motocross-specific gear ratios.
  • NEW chomoly steel frame is nearly a pound lighter with 7% more torsional rigidity and 25% less longitudinal stiffness for more agility and better bump absorption.
  • NEW WP AER 43 front fork with a sophisticated air spring design and separate damping for easy adjustment to any track condition, rider weight or skill level.
  • NEW WP PDS (Progressive Damping System) rear shock provides excellent bump absorption and stability.
  • NEW aluminum subframe is lighter and more compact for better mass centralization.
  • NEW cooling system features integrated crankcase cooling and two radiators for high performance. The newly designed system uses the shroud and grill to protect the radiator in a crash.
  • NEW sharp bodywork that is based of the full-sized SX models with the same contact points and overall feel for perfect ergonomics.
  • NEW airbox similar to the larger SX models allows for air filter changes in seconds without tools.
  • Black coated high-end Excel rims, lightweight, CNC machined hubs and black spokes with lightweight aluminum nipples ensure the highest stability at minimum weight on the KTM 85 SX.
