Photo of the Day: Cole Picchiottino, Trek’s 29-Inch Downhill Pioneer

While Greg Minnaar gets much of the credit for the rise of the 29-inch downhill bikes’ sudden popularity, Southern California’s Cole Picchiottino (seen here) had long been testing Trek’s prototype, 29-inch downhill bikes. When Minnaar and the Santa Cruz Syndicate started doing well with their V-10 29ers on the World Cup scene, Trek and some other companies decided they had better start marketing their own 29-inch downhill bikes to take advantage of the sudden interest. All the bike market needs is for one rider to start winning races on a different wheel size for the demand to begin, and Trek wanted to be in on the action. During the prototype phases, Cole regularly switched back and forth between the two wheel sizes to evaluate the bikes for Trek. That actually looks like it might be Cole’s 27.5-incher in the photo here. It’s hard to tell. Cole would know for sure. Photo: Phil Beckman/PB Creative
