In between races, we took some time to browse our hard drives and look at photos taken throughout the year. We'll highlight each shot in a daily post, with the image sized to fit your computer screen or smartphone and described with a small backstory…
For roughly a decade, Antonio Cairoli has been the star of the MXGP circuit. Sure, other riders have snatched race wins or titles away from the Sicilian but through it all, he remains a front-runner in the international series. An uncommon run of injuries, along with the rise of Romain Febvre and Tim Gajser, made many wonder if Cairoli would claim another title before his career ran out, but he took each setback in stride. In the months leading up to the 2017 Monster Energy FIM Motocross World Championship, AC222 was able to get through his pre-season training and warm-up races without issue and was ready to go for the nineteen round run around the globe.
With nine moto wins on the year and unmatched consistency (he has scored points in every moto run thus far, something no other rider did), Cairoli clinched his ninth world championship at the 2017 MXGP of The Netherlands at Assen. Even though the title was wrapped up a round early, the Red Bull KTM MXGP rider did not cruise to the top. There were incredible performances, like his run through the pack at the MXGP of Trentino, battles with teammate Jeffrey Herlings in sandy conditions, and tactical rides that minimized any chance Herlings had to close the gap.
Congratulations to Antonio, Jill, Red Bull KTM MXGP, and other associates of this year’s championship run.
