Starts tell story of the day for Hampshire, Sexton and McAdoo
Washougal, WA (July 28, 2018) - The GEICO Honda motocross squad was on a podium pace at round nine of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, but inconsistent starts at the beautiful Washougal Motocross Park dashed their bids for the box. RJ Hampshire netted fifth overall with 10-4 scores, wishing he had a better moto one start. Conversely, a second-turn crash in moto two cost Chase Sexton dearly, but a superb comeback left him with 5-10 scores and ninth overall. Cameron McAdoo had one good start and 16-11 for 14th overall.
"The start was more important this weekend than usual," said Hampshire. "Very hard to pass and everyone was so close in speed. In the first moto I got a poor start and had a poor finish. Second moto had a much better start and made a couple passes quick. I was happy with my riding, I turned the fastest lap of the race but was back in fourth and couldn't catch the lead group. Wish I would have got out of the gate better that first moto!"
Sexton was only ninth overall, but he rode very well. He was matching the leaders while running to fifth in moto one, and then shadowed first-moto winner Joey Savatgy through the pack the whole way in moto two. Both had crashed early.
"Washougal was my best riding so far!" said Sexton. "Felt comfortable all day and it showed first moto coming from about 15th to catching the lead four. I ended up fifth but I could see the guys up ahead by the end, so that felt good. Second moto just messed up my start again and ended up falling in the second turn with a few riders which put me last. I managed to make my way back to the top 10 but I was pretty bummed because it was a podium day for me. I'm feeling really good on the bike right now and I'm going to take these two weeks before Unadilla to do a lot of starts so we can put ourselves in a good position when it comes time to race again!"
McAdoo also said he was feeling better at Washougal. In his first visit to the track, he just missed a top-ten in the second moto. He ran ninth most of the way before the Savatgy and Sexton train passed him late.
"First visit to Washougal and the track was great," he said. "Really a beautiful place to race. The results were a bit up and down for me. Starts we're still off. Had good speed at the beginning of moto one but struggled to make a few important passes which kind of dictated the whole moto. You had to get guys at the right time or you would get stuck behind them the whole way. In moto two my start wasn't great again but this time I made some passes early and was running inside the top 10 for the first 25 minutes. I ended up 11th. Still working at it--confident we're going to get there one of these weekends."
The GEICO Honda professional team gets a week off while the motocross industry focuses on the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Championship at Loretta Lynn Ranch. The Amsoil/Factory Connection Honda squad--the amateur arm of GEICO Honda--will be in action at that event, featuring Jo Shimoda, Carson Mumford and Hunter Yoder. Live daily racing coverage will be available Tuesday through Saturday at RacerTV.com. The pro team resumes racing on August 11 at Unadilla in New Berlin, New York.
