Replay & Results Of The 2019 Riola Sardo Motocross Italian Preseason Race
With the start of the 2019 Monster Energy FIM Motocross World Championship looming, it’s time for European-based riders to get things in order. Over the weekend a number of top competitors headed to the Italian island of Sardinia for the opening round of the 2019 Internazionali d’Italia Motocross championship, the 2019 Riola Sardo Motocross. The Internazionali d’Italia Motocross series is a three-round championship that takes place on some of the sandier tracks in Italy and includes one moto for the MX1 (450cc) and MX2 (250cc) classes, plus a combined Superfinal that pulls the top finishers from both classes and puts them on the track for an all-star moto.
Reigning MX2 world champion Jorge Prado took the win in the MX2 class, but it was not a start to finish sweep for the young Spaniard. Italian teenager Mattia Guadagnini led and held off Prado through the opening half of the moto aboard a Husqvarna TC 250, but eventually, the Red Bull KTM MXGP rider made a pass for the top spot.
Former World Champions Tim Gajser, Antonio Cairoli, and Romain Febvre all had a chance at the top spot in the MX1 class and the trio stayed close in the first half of the MX1 moto.Team HRC Honda’s Gajser led the early laps on his Team HRC Honda until Red Bull KTM MXGP’s Cairoli managed to close the gap and make the pass, and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Febvre’s followed with a pass of his own on Gajser for second place.
The SuperFinal win went to Cairoli, as he crossed the finish line eighteen-seconds ahead of second place finisher Gajser while 250cc-mounted Prado nabbed third, a respectable finish against 450cc-filled field that included riders Gautier Paulin, Febvre, and Arminas Jasikonis.
