Salt Lake City Supercross 450 Class Photo Finish
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Marvin Musquin claimed his fourth 450SX main-event victory of the season in the penultimate round of the AMA Supercross series at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah. Musquin came around the first corner in second and moved into the lead after three laps, and went on to lead the remaining 23 circulations around the dry and dusty course to take the win.
"Sometimes it's not the fastest guy who wins the race," Musquin said. "You've got to be very consistent. The whoops are really, really tough and you know I was just trying to be safe and get it done. I was happy to win here. It's definitely not a track that suits me. It's hard and slippery, but the bike was working good. It was a tough day for me, but that made me stronger."
Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac began his day by setting the fastest qualifying time by more than a full second over his nearest competitor. He went on to finish second in his heat race and, in the start of the main event, he rounded the first corner in 10th place and made his way into the top five by the halfway point of the race. Tomac had a small crash while battling for second place, but remounted his KX450F and was able to complete the pass for second place with two laps to go, where he would finish on the night.
“It took me a while to find my groove in the main,” Tomac said. “Once I found it, I was able to make a lot of passes and catch the leaders. The crash was unfortunate, but I'm pumped to still finish second. Once again, the fans were awesome here in Salt Lake and I could hear them with every pass I made, that is so cool.”
Rocky Mountain ATV/MC-KTM-WPS’s Blake Baggett grabbed the holeshot and led three laps before getting passed by Musquin and then Tomac later in the race to finish third. Baggett is tied for fourth in the championship standings with Smartop/Bullfrog Spas/MotoConcepts Honda’s Justin Brayton leading into the final round in Las Vegas.
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Jason Anderson, the championship point leader, finished third in his heat race and went down at the start of the 450 main event and pulled into the mechanic’s area to swap the front wheel of his FC 450 Rockstar Edition machine. By the time Anderson reentered the race, he was two laps down and began picking off riders one at a time and worked his way up to 17th place by the time the checkered flag flew. Anderson sits 14 points ahead of Musquin in the point standings leading into the final round at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.
“I was pretty good in practice all day,” Anderson said. “I had a solid heat race and qualified well. I just went down in the first turn in the main and had to go all the way around the track. I broke some spokes in the first turn and had to come into the mechanic’s area to get my front wheel changed. By that time, I was two laps down. I was able to unlap myself and get up to 17th and at least get some points. I’m going into next week in Vegas with a 14-point lead.”
