Race Report: Sheffield's Howard St Dual

2019 Race film by Joby NewsonNow Then.

Who'd of thought this time last year that we'd be racing in tee-shirts down the streets of Sheffield? But as we all know, it's always tropical in 'Gods own county' so it was rad to welcome everyone to the third annual #HowardStreetDual with added vitamin D.

Local heroes and some pinned visitors from afar meant the depth of talent in the field this year was deep... We had a stacked women's field with 16 racers, including German national champ Nina Hoffman who was in town the whole week checking out the sites and sounds of the city. For the men, could Brett Penfold be a king-slayer once again? Could Peaty hold onto his home-town crown? It was all to play for.Born out of a love for dual slalom and racing your mates, the event has evolved each year through the passion and vision of Nick Hamilton, Jon Dallow, The Outdoor City campaign and countless other volunteers and riders, who all thrive off showcasing and supporting the thriving MTB scene that Sheffield has to offer. The course snakes through the city centre, smack bang in the centre of the busy Howard St which on a Saturday night is one of the major funnels into town for those heading for a more lubricated kind of evening, which means there's an amazing mix of die-hard fans and first time spectators who are seeing the sport for the first time. Apart from the big ball of fire in the sky, new for this year was an improved live feed with the addition of more cameras, slicker production and the fantastic Anna Glowinski who helped narrate all the action to those of you who tuned in online. The track itself hadn't massively changed, but with the dry terrain comes more speed and new opportunities for 'creative' lines.Riders ready, watch the gravy, bee bee beeeeep. Welcome to Sheffield.
